Summary

Yoga = cessation of mental modifications (citta-vritti-nirodhah). Pure consciousness (purusha) is the eternal witness, distinct from material nature (prakriti). Eight limbs: yama, niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, samadhi. Samadhi progressively dissolves subject-object duality, revealing purusha in its isolation (kaivalya).

Why It Matters

The foundational text for understanding contemplative transformation of consciousness. Samadhi research is now a growing area within consciousness studies.
