Summary

Distinguishes feedforward (~100ms, unconscious) from recurrent processing (re-entrant loops, conscious). Consciousness arises specifically from recurrent processing within the visual hierarchy. Prefrontal cortex is NOT necessary.

Why It Matters

Strongest challenge to GNW's prefrontal emphasis. The PFC vs. Posterior Hot Zone debate structures the field.
