Towards a Cognitive Neuroscience of Consciousness
By Stanislas Dehaene and Lionel Naccache
Summary
Neural implementation of GWT: conscious access = "ignition" of long-range pyramidal neurons in prefrontal, parietal, and anterior cingulate cortices, producing sustained synchronized firing. Unconscious stimuli produce only local, transient activity.
Why It Matters
The most experimentally tested theory of consciousness. Dehaene's masking and no-report paradigms provided direct neural signatures.
