Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bardo Thodol)
By Padmasambhava (~8th c.); revealed by Karma Lingpa (14th c.)
Summary
A guide for the consciousness (bardo) between death and rebirth. Three bardos: the moment of death (chikhai bardo), the reality (chonyid bardo) where visionary appearances arise from one's own mind, and the rebirth (sidpa/sipa bardo) where consciousness seeks rebirth. "Recognize the clear light of reality — this is your own awareness."
Why It Matters
Describes a phenomenology of post-mortem consciousness that parallels NDE accounts (tunnel, light, life review, encounters). Addresses the question: does consciousness survive bodily death?
