The Analysis of Matter
By Bertrand Russell
Summary
Physics reveals only the *relational structure* of matter, not its intrinsic nature. The intrinsic nature of the physical world may be something akin to percepts or mental events. Consciousness is not an addition to the physical world but may be what matter *is* intrinsically.
Why It Matters
Russell's structuralism is the foundation of Russellian monism, arguably the most promising position for integrating consciousness into the natural world without either eliminating it or positing it as a separate substance.
